How to measure a narrow gap for a kitchen cart

A narrow cart can turn an awkward gap into storage, but its width is only part of the decision. It must also pull out, clear nearby doors and live in a location permitted by the appliance and cart instructions.

The decision that matters

Measure the gap at several heights and reserve a full pull-out route.

Measure more than the top opening

Record the narrowest width at the floor, middle and top of the intended cart. Include baseboards, cabinet trim, pipes and any uneven wall. Measure depth to the first obstruction and note outlets or valves you must keep accessible. A space that looks rectangular from above may narrow near the wheels.

Check the appliance instructions first

A gap beside a refrigerator, oven or other appliance may serve ventilation, service or operating requirements. Do not fill that gap simply because the arithmetic works. Use the appliance manufacturer's required clearances and the cart's placement restrictions. This guide and calculator do not approve installation beside a heat source.

Plan where the cart goes when open

Measure the floor area in front of the gap. Include the cart depth and the place where you stand to retrieve an item. Check dishwasher and cabinet doors in the position you use them. A cart that blocks another essential opening whenever it moves can make the kitchen harder to use.

Match shelf openings to the contents

Measure the largest bottle or container and compare shelf height, internal width and any retaining rails. Choose contents according to the product instructions and keep weight within each shelf's limit. Store frequently used objects where you can grasp them without tipping the cart or pulling a heavy item sideways.

Allow room for cleaning and servicing

Check whether you can remove the cart entirely to clean the gap and access the appliance. Floor transitions and rugs can affect rolling; follow the wheel and floor guidance. Confirm the exact cart model and size on the retailer listing because a similar-looking variant can have a different footprint.

Try your measurements

Check one dimension.

Illustrative values are prefilled. Replace them with measurements for your own room and selected model. All inputs use inches; the allowance is a total, not a per-side value.

Enter your measurements, then calculate.

A 7-inch illustrative gap minus a 5-inch cart leaves 2 inches before reserving any required clearance. Manufacturer requirements take priority over the result.

This calculator performs subtraction only. It does not establish safe installation, stability, accessibility, load capacity or fit in other dimensions. Manufacturer instructions take priority.
