Will a rolling laundry hamper pass through your doorway?

Wheels help only when the route works. A hamper may fit where you park it but fail at a door, a tight turn or a floor transition on the way to the washer. Measure the route as carefully as the storage location.

The decision that matters

Check the narrowest opening, the turn and the floor changes; width alone is only the first test.

Measure the whole hamper

Use the selected model's widest overall dimensions, including handles, frame and wheels. Distinguish the bag's capacity from the cart's exterior footprint. If a handle projects beyond the frame, it can be the part that catches the doorway even when the bag appears narrow enough.

Measure the usable doorway

Measure the opening with the door in its real open position. The door leaf, hinges, stops and handles may reduce usable space. Do not substitute a nominal door size for that measurement. Repeat at every pinch point rather than relying on the largest doorway on the route.

Try the corner

A rectangle that passes through a straight opening may still be difficult to turn in a short hallway. Mark the cart's width and depth on a flat piece of cardboard and move that outline through the route. This checks floor geometry only; account separately for the height and any protruding objects.

Check floors and changes in level

Look at rugs, thresholds and the manufacturer's wheel instructions. Do not assume a loaded hamper can be rolled across steps or carried by a handle not rated for lifting. For a route involving stairs, a removable carrying bag may be more practical; assess its handling independently rather than loading a large cart and discovering the problem later.

Test the wash-day position

At the machine, leave space to open doors and unload the compartments. Check whether wheel locks are included or required by the instructions. A cart that reaches the laundry area but blocks the machine door has not passed the full route test. Keep loads within the specified limits and avoid balancing extra items on top.

Try your measurements

Check one dimension.

Illustrative values are prefilled. Replace them with measurements for your own room and selected model. All inputs use inches; the allowance is a total, not a per-side value.

Enter your measurements, then calculate.

A 24-inch-wide cart in an illustrative 29-inch usable opening leaves 5 inches total, not 5 inches on each side. Turning and floor suitability still need checking.

This calculator performs subtraction only. It does not establish safe installation, stability, accessibility, load capacity or fit in other dimensions. Manufacturer instructions take priority.
