Will a C-shaped side table fit under your sofa?

A C-shaped table can bring a surface closer to a seat, but its shape alone does not establish compatibility. You need two separate fits: the base beneath the sofa and the tabletop above the seat or arm.

The decision that matters

Measure the sofa's underside and the table's base thickness, not just the table's overall height.

Measure the real opening

Look under the sofa where the base would slide. Fabric underneath, crossbars and center legs may sit lower than the front edge suggests. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction along the intended insertion path. Rugs and their pads change the available opening; measure with them in place.

Find the base dimensions

An overall product height does not tell you the thickness or shape of the bottom frame. Check the dimensional drawing or ask the seller for the base thickness, width and depth. If those measurements are unavailable, treat the under-sofa fit as unconfirmed. Product photographs are not a reliable measuring scale.

Try the reach before the purchase

Mock up the tabletop at its proposed height using a stable existing surface without loading an improvised structure. Sit normally and check where the front edge would land. The table may clear the sofa but still be too far from your hands, or bring a cup into the path used when standing up.

Allow for moving furniture

Keep the table outside a recliner's or sleeper sofa's moving mechanism. Do not rely on the fit calculator to establish clearance around moving parts; follow the furniture manufacturer's instructions. A C-frame is also not a substitute for a grab bar or support when rising from a seat.

When a conventional end table is easier

A normal side table can be a better choice when the sofa has little floor clearance or you want a permanent surface beside an arm. Compare the actual footprint in that position. The goal is a usable surface within reach, not forcing a particular table shape into the room.

Try your measurements

Check one dimension.

Illustrative values are prefilled. Replace them with measurements for your own room and selected model. All inputs use inches; the allowance is a total, not a per-side value.

Enter your measurements, then calculate.

With an illustrative 2-inch opening and a 1-inch base, the difference is 1 inch before any additional margin. You must still verify the base's full insertion path and the tabletop position.

This calculator performs subtraction only. It does not establish safe installation, stability, accessibility, load capacity or fit in other dimensions. Manufacturer instructions take priority.
